Surely you've heard of Cancun, formerly a Mexican fishing village, transformed into an international center of tourism now boasting more than 25,000 hotel rooms. But do you know of the Mayan Riviera, the sprawling coastal paradise of beach and jungle stretching more than 200 miles south of Cancun? Once the province of the indiginous Mayan Indians, this region is now coming to the attention of scuba divers, eco-tourists, and adventurous travelers interested in getting off the beaten path and into unexplored jungles and onto pristine coral reefs and historic shipwrecks.

Heading south from Cancun, the farther one goes...the more intriguing the options become, and the more remote and unexplored is the territory. Playa del Carmen, Akumal, Puerto Aventuras, Tulum, Xcaret, Mahahual, Xcalak - the names of the towns bespeak the Mayan history and the touristic future of this intriguing area. To learn more about the region, you might wish to access the valuable infomation in this excerpt from TravelAge West Magazine: Mayan Riviera Information. Or perhaps you'd care to consider Ken Knezick's very current Report from Costa Maya.

Scuba divers familiar with the delights of Cozumel will find the Mayan Riviera and the Costa Maya an enticing opportunity. Inshore, the reef offers mile after mile of spur and groove coral formations, much of it virtually unexplored. To the south, and farther offshore, is an immense coral reef called Chinchorro. An ancient mountain top reaching just to the surface of the Yucatan Channel, Chinchorro is more than 30 miles long, and as much as 9 miles wide. Viewed from the air, it is actually similar in shape and size to nearby Cozumel island. But the reef is almost entirely submerged, its coral peaks and ridges reaching to just below the surface. As a result, Chinchorro is the resting place of many a shipwreck, some dating back hundreds of years to the time of the Conquistadors.

Beyond scuba diving and snorkeling on these pristine reefs, there is yet a great deal more to do in the region. Activities include kayaking, birding, exploring cenotes, and of course investigation of the stunning and historic Mayan architectural sites. The adventurous traveler will find this area and its myriad offerings as diverse, challenging, and satisfying as any place in the world.

The attraction of Chinchorro and the Costa Maya is clear, but up until now, getting there has been the challenge. Fortunately, a new resort has just come on the scene specifically to make Chinchorro and the surrounding topside attractions of the Yucatan more accessible to scuba divers and eco-tourists. Maya Ha Resort has created a completely new hotel concept to provide exciting new ecotourism offerings.
